Tanya James – Inpatient Unit Healthcare Assistant

Annually, St Elizabeth Hospice cares for more than 4,000 patients and their families throughout East & Mid Suffolk, Great Yarmouth and Waveney. This care sees the independent Suffolk charity providing free services – whenever and wherever it is needed, whether at home, in the community or at the hospice – to those living with a progressive or life-limiting illness.

One member of the hospice’s clinical team is Tanya James, who is a healthcare assistant on the charity’s Ipswich Inpatient Unit.

“It’s incredibly rewarding to provide comfort, support and reassurance to patients we care for. Knowing that even small acts of kindness can make a meaningful difference motivates me every day,” said Tanya, who lives near Ipswich.

“I work as a healthcare assistant at St Elizabeth Hospice and have been part of the team since 2011. Working for such a long period of time at the charity really shows how much I enjoy my job and being part of such a special organisation in my local community.

“Prior to joining the hospice, I completed my NVQ Level 2 in Health and Social Care at Ipswich Hospital, where I gained a foundation in clinical skills and patient support. I then worked with Marie Curie, an experience that strengthened my commitment to providing compassionate end-of-life care.

“As a result, when I saw an opportunity to work for St Elizabeth Hospice I didn’t hesitate to apply. I was so pleased to join the charity and haven’t looked back since.

“I was drawn to hospice care because of the focus on the patient as a person. The care we provide takes a holistic approach, which supports the patient’s physical and mental health needs, as well as caring for their family and loved ones too.

“Every day is varied, which is part of what makes it so meaningful and interesting. I might start a shift by helping patients with washing, dressing or supporting them with mobility – but a lot of the day is also about being present, managing symptoms and offering emotional support.

“We also work closely with families, providing guidance, listening to their concerns and helping them cope during a difficult time. The approach is collaborative and tailored to each individual, ensuring dignity and quality of life are at the heart of everything we do.

“Each day brings different challenges and opportunities to make a difference, but the constant is knowing the care I provide helps maintain dignity, comfort and a sense of peace for patients and their loved ones.

“I feel very privileged to support patients and their families during such important times in their lives. It is both humbling and rewarding.

“Living locally, I regularly meet people who have experienced the care of St Elizabeth Hospice and seen the impact of its services. I feel very proud to be part of an organisation that has such a positive influence on the lives of so many in my community.

“People should reach out to St Elizabeth Hospice because we really can make a difference when care matters most. Our team is here to ensure you and your loved ones can live as well as possible.”
