Our referral criteria
Please note, different catchment areas have different criteria for referrals:

- Great Yarmouth & Waveney: We support adults aged 18 and over who are bereaved following the death of a loved one who was previously known to St Elizabeth East Coast Hospice.

- East Suffolk: We accept referrals for anyone grieving the loss of a loved one who died from a progressive or life-limiting illness, regardless of whether they were known to the hospice. This includes conditions such as cancer, heart failure, kidney disease, motor neurone disease, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, and dementia.
Bereavement Support
Our early intervention service is for individuals in the first 12 weeks following a bereavement. This is a short-term, timely service focused on offering compassionate support during the earliest stages of grief.
- Offered within four weeks of referral
- Up to six supportive telephone calls
- Provides emotional support, understanding and gentle guidance
- Group support available
- Designed to help individuals navigate the immediate impact of their loss
If this service doesn’t feel like the right fit for you at this time, you are welcome to get back in touch at a later stage, when you feel ready.
For those who are more than 12 weeks after their loss, we offer a range of support options tailored to individual needs, including:
- One-to-one bereavement counselling
- Face-to-face, telephone, online support or group support
- Personalised support based on individual circumstances
- We aim to offer this support within 8-12 weeks of your referral, however, time frames may vary depending on demand
To help us provide timely and appropriate support for everyone, referrals for this service are available from 12 weeks after a bereavement.
If you have a bereavement from a different cause. such as loss of a baby, child, adult or suicide, visit our LivingGrief Hub website to be signposted to tailored support for your grief.
As well as specific services, there are social support groups within Ipswich, Stowmarket, Woodbridge, Felixstowe, Great Yarmouth, Gorleston, Lowestoft and surrounding areas.
Our 565 service is available to children and young people who live in the East & Mid-Suffolk area who are mourning a loss from a progressive or life-limiting condition.
