Study Day on Effective Communication and Person-Centred Care for People with Learning Disabilities -Funded by the North East Essex Working Group
Our Study Days are tailored sessions designed to enhance professional knowledge, encourage reflection, and equip staff with practical tools to support patients and their families.
Each Study Day offers focused training in key areas of palliative care. Sessions are delivered by experienced educators and clinicians and include interactive elements to encourage shared learning and discussion.
These sessions are funded by the North East Essex Working Group. Only staff across North East Essex are eligible to attend this session. These are held in person at St Helena Hospice, Colchester.
Effective Communication and Person-Centred Care for People with Learning Disabilities
This session develops skills to communicate effectively with people with learning disabilities, understand common health needs, and adapt care to provide sensitive, person-centred support.
Learning outcomes:
- Apply holistic communication skills to enhance interactions with people with learning disabilities.
- Recognise common co-morbidities associated with learning disabilities and their impact on health and wellbeing.
- Identify and implement appropriate adjustments to care in order to meet a diverse range of individual needs.
- Communicate more effectively by allowing additional time, simplifying language where necessary, and responding appropriately to sensory needs.
- Recognise the importance of discussing death and dying with individuals with learning disabilities in an open, honest, and person-centred way.
- Identify barriers to communication and the need for clear, accessible language.

Parking
Parking is limited at all 3 hospice sites so we ask that you park in accordance with the highway code as poor parking creates a reputational risk for the hospices with our neighbours . Due to the residential location of St Helena Hospice, please take note of restricted parking areas along with overflow parking option and footpath route to the hospice.
