Study Day on Adaptive and Distressed Behaviours in Palliative Care & Advanced Dementia and Palliative Care – NEE
Our Study Days are tailored sessions designed to enhance professional knowledge, encourage reflection, and equip staff with practical tools to support patients and their families.
Each Study Day offers focused training in key areas of palliative care. Sessions are delivered by experienced educators and clinicians and include interactive elements to encourage shared learning and discussion.
All sessions are FREE for North East Essex employees and are held in person at St Helena Hospice, Colchester.
Adaptive and Distressed Behaviours in Palliative Care
Learning outcomes:
- Recognise patterns of behaviour to current situations and triggers to past experiences.
- Understand the cycle of distress and range of emotional reactions
- Recognise impact of ineffective communication on distressed person
- Be able to reflect on own emotional and behavioural response to challenging situations
- Consider approaches that can be employed to de-escalate distressed behaviours
Advanced Dementia and Palliative Care
Learning outcomes:
- Identify symptoms of Advance Stage Dementia.
- Explain the difference between palliative and end of life care
- Recognise the signs that a person is approaching the end of life.
- Identify types of pain and tools to support pain assessment.
- Reflect on how own behaviour and communication skills can impact on assessment process and care interventions.
Explain what is meant by a dignified death and how to support this in practice

Parking
Parking is limited at all 3 hospice sites so we ask that you park in accordance with the highway code as poor parking creates a reputational risk for the hospices with our neighbours . Due to the residential location of St Helena Hospice, please take note of restricted parking areas along with overflow parking option and footpath route to the hospice.
