Lucy Warnes – Registered Nurse

Annually, St Elizabeth Hospice cares for more than 4,000 patients and their families throughout East & Mid Suffolk, Great Yarmouth and Waveney. This care sees the independent Suffolk charity providing free services – whenever and wherever it is needed, whether at home, in the community or at the hospice – to those living with a progressive or life-limiting illness.
One member of the hospice’s clinical team is Lucy Warnes, who is a registered nurse on the charity’s Inpatient Unit in Ipswich.
“It is a real honour to be able to provide care to patients and their families and help them navigate the end-of-life journey,” explained Lucy, who has been a part of the hospice team since 2024.
“St Elizabeth Hospice is a real local community hub. It holds such a special place in many people’s hearts. I feel fortunate to work here alongside a brilliant team of hospice staff and volunteers.
“One of my earliest childhood memories is visiting my grandad at St Elizabeth Hospice, when he was receiving care. I remember spending time with him in the garden and enjoying those visits. This might be where my inspiration to become a nurse first began – it’s the only job I’ve ever wanted to do.

“I’ve now been a nurse for 17 years. Early in my career, I worked as a community nurse, which introduced me to palliative care. After starting a family, I moved into the leg ulcer clinic, which I really enjoyed, but I missed the palliative aspect of nursing.
“In 2023, I began volunteering with the Butterfly Team at Ipswich Hospital, offering companionship to patients in their last days of life. I found it so rewarding that it inspired me to apply for a role at the hospice, and I was thrilled to be offered the position and join the team – a decision I’ve never regretted.
“On average, I do around 1,000 steps an hour – so it’s busy role, but I like that! Despite being busy, we always have time to spend quality moments with patients and their families. Building those relationships is so important and really helps us deliver high-quality care to meet each patient’s individual needs.
“What makes the hospice special is the whole team. Everyone plays a vital role – from volunteers and domestic staff to maintenance, the wellbeing team and clinical staff.
“I love how everyone goes above and beyond for patients and their families. Whether it’s decorating for special occasions, ordering someone’s favourite takeaway, playing their favourite music or TV shows, offering books and crafts, or just being a listening ear.
“It’s amazing to be part of an organisation that supports the patient as a person, as well as meeting their healthcare needs.
“Working as a nurse on St Elizabeth Hospice’s Inpatient Unit is deeply rewarding and I feel very lucky to have a job which enables me to support a cause I am passionate about.
“On top of this, I work with a brilliant team, who all look out for each, checking in on our own wellbeing too – it is just a warm and welcoming working environment to be part of.
“I would recommend St Elizabeth Hospice’s services to anyone who feels they or their loved one could benefit from the charity’s care.
“From my own family’s experience, and through my role as a hospice nurse, I know hospice care can significantly improve the quality of life for people and their families facing a life-limiting illness. Our team is here to help you and your loved ones, when support matters most.”
