Laura’s story

My family and I go along to Suffolk Remembers every year to remember my grandparents who were both cared for by the wonderful hospice staff.

My Nanna, Pat, sadly passed away 11 years ago and my Grandad, Colin, 3 years, who passed away on Suffolk Day.

Nanna was cared for at home by the hospice, after being diagnosed with breast cancer, whilst Grandad was cared for in the hospice, before he passed away after a short battle with lung cancer.

The teams were incredibly caring and offered my family fantastic support, even once Nanna had passed. Whilst Grandad was in the hospice, the team did everything they could to ensure he was as comfortable as possible.

Their care could not be faulted. Despite the sadness that comes with having a loved one nearing the end of their life, we always felt assured that Grandad was in the best possible place to receive support, when we visit him in the hospice. His comfort was the staff’s priority, at all times and nothing ever seemed too much for the team.

Suffolk Remembers offers us the perfect opportunity to reflect and remember Nanna and Grandad. It’s become an annual, family tradition and it’s lovely to give back to the hospice after all that they do.

It gives us the space and time to stop and think about them and nothing else. It’s always an uplifting event, with the music and the lovely readings taking place by the sea, making it even more special, helping to create lasting memories.
