Assisted Dying – Bi-Monthly Learning Sessions
Assisted Dying – Bi-Monthly Learning Sessions
In November 2024 the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life ) Bill which contains legislation to permit assisted dying passed its second reading in Parliament. If this legislation passes into law, it will fundamentally change the options open to people in England and Wales facing the end of life. It will have implications for patients, families, clinicians and health and care services.
For much of the last few years discussion on this topic has been as part of a polarised debate. In response to this challenge Hospice Education plans to offer a bi-monthly learning session, via Microsoft Teams, on the topic of assisted dying to share the learning from jurisdictions where assisted dying has already been legalised. Over these sessions we will follow the progress of the committee stage of the bill and examine the research from places such as Oregon, where assisted dying has been legal for over 25 years. We will examine topics such as bereavement after assisted dying and the relationships between hospices and assisted dying services. We aim to create a safe and respectful space where we can learn together on this important and emotive subject.
