Visit a garden and help the Hospice
Green-fingered residents across Suffolk will be opening their gardens to the public throughout the summer to raise money for charity St Elizabeth Hospice.
The open gardens season begins this weekend in Ipswich and Orford.
On Saturday 2nd June a traditional 1930’s garden in Princethorpe Road, Ipswich, will be open. The ¼ acre plot, consisting of lawns, flower/shrub borders; a Wendy house and log cabin will be open from 11am to 4pm and admission is £1. Afternoon tea and cakes, plant stall, bric-a-brac and draw will also be available.
Creek Cottage in Quay Street, Orford will be open on Sunday 3rd June from 12pm to 5pm. The large garden is set behind two old cottages and offers a dyke around half of the garden and lots of pretty trees and shrubs. Visitors are asked to make a donation to the Hospice, and afternoon tea and cakes will be available.
Other highlights of the season include:
• Capel St Mary – Sunday 10th June – gardens and village allotments will be open in The Street, 2pm to 5.30pm.
• Barham Hall – in Barham, Ipswich, will be open on Sunday 24th June from 2pm to 6pm.
• Wickham – Sunday, 10th June, the Old Forge and other gardens will be open across Wickham Skeith, 2pm to 6pm.
Last year’s St Elizabeth Hospice open garden season raised around £10,000 for the Hospice and this year organisers hope it will be just as popular. Andrea Chupacova, community fundraiser, said: “Visiting an open garden is a great way to spend a relaxing summer’s afternoon and you may even get some inspiration and ideas for your own garden and raise money for the Hospice at the same time.”
St Elizabeth Hospice is an independent charity which provides its services free of charge. Its services costs £8.7 million a year to run, with almost three quarters of that figure coming from the local community.
