St Elizabeth Hospice marks Hospice Care Week (Oct 7-13) by asking can we Count on You?

07 October 2013
The growing need for St Elizabeth Hospice care will be highlighted this week alongside a call for people in East Suffolk and South Norfolk to support it.

During Hospice Care Week (Oct 7-13), St Elizabeth Hospice will raise awareness of how each year it helps over 2,000 people living with a progressive illness and their families. The Hospice will also focus on the vital role local people, community groups, schools and businesses play to ensure care is provided free of charge and reaches as many people as possible in need, now and in the future.

Patients, staff and supporters will be out and about talking about the Hospice and asking people to make a Count Me In! pledge to spread the word further.

All 25 St Elizabeth Hospice shops will have Count Me In! pledge postcards available for customers and supporters to sign, and at schools, pupils will be collecting coins to spell out St Elizabeth Hospice.

St Elizabeth Hospice’s Chief Executive Jane Petit said: “The demand for St Elizabeth Hospice care is growing. More people are living and dying with complex needs and we aim to ensure they receive the care they need when and where they need it, in their homes or at the Hospice.

“During the week we will be asking people to take part in the Count Me In! pledge to spread the word about why Hospice care counts.

“St Elizabeth Hospice costs £9.1m a year to provide its services free of charge. We simply could not do this without the amazing support of our volunteers, fundraisers and other individual, group or business supporters. This week we will be engaging with our wider community asking what could they do to help ensure local Hospice care grows for local people.”

St Elizabeth Hospice is one of more than 100 hospices across the UK taking part in this year’s national Hospice Care Week.

David Praill, Chief Executive of Help the Hospices, the UK charity for hospice care, said “Hospice care helps people to live well until they die, supporting people and their families, and providing tailored care and support.

This Hospice Care Week we hope to raise greater awareness about the vital role that local hospices play in meeting this increasing demand. We are asking people to help by speaking out about the important role their local hospice plays and making sure that hospices have the support they need to reach more people.”
