Remember a loved one by scattering Roses on the River

06 June 2012

Anyone wishing to remember a loved one who has died can join a new remembrance cruise – where there will be a poignant opportunity to scatter rose petals into the water.

St Elizabeth Hospice has officially launched its Roses on the River event which will take place on Saturday 8th September – and it is open to anyone, not just those touched by hospice care.

Participants will sail on the Orwell Lady along the River Orwell from the Ipswich Dock to Freston and back again.

There will be a short non-religious remembrance service on board containing poems and readings and an opportunity to scatter rose petals into the river and have a time of reflection. There will be cruises throughout the day and each one lasts one and a half hours.

Event organiser Jayne Parsons, of St Elizabeth Hospice, said: “This is a new and uplifting way for anyone who has lost a loved-one to gather with friends and family for a time of reflection on the river.

“We hope it will give people comfort and an opportunity to gather their thoughts and remember the person who is no longer with them, in a meaningful way.”

The event is also set to help raise funds for St Elizabeth Hospice, an independent charity which provides its services free of charge, but relies on donations to meet the majority of its £8.7m annual running costs.

The Hospice improves life for people living with a progressive illness. Its work is centred around an individual’s needs, which means specialist support, wherever it is required, whether at home, in the community or at the Hospice. It helps people deal with problems such as pain, anxiety and fatigue, as well as offering practical advice and family support.

Places are offered for a minimum donation of £40. Children under five will be admitted free.
