Liz’s Half Marathon Fundraiser in Memory of Father-in-Law

23 January 2025

Liz Cobbold is taking on the Great Yarmouth Seafront Half Marathon this March to raise funds for St Elizabeth East Coast Hospice in memory of her father-in-law, John Cobbold.

Inspired by the care given by the hospice’s community team to John in 2019, before his death from esophageal cancer, Liz (pictured right) will be joining hundreds of runners taking on the challenge on 2nd March.

Hosted by Active Training World Events, the Great Yarmouth Seafront race will see runners complete either a 10k or half marathon route. Both routes start and finish at Wellesley Recreation Ground, and will take in the scenic sights of the town, with St Elizabeth East Coast Hospice being the official charity partner.

Liz, who will be running with her two friends and her sister, said: “I’ve run half marathons before, but this is my first time fundraising during a run. It will be tough, but my training is going well, and knowing people are generously donating is a great motivation to keep going as I give back to this amazing charity.

“As his condition deteriorated, John moved in with my husband Matt, myself, and our two children. It was his wish to receive care at home, surrounded by his family, for as long as possible, and the hospice helped make this happen.

“From daily visits to assist with symptom management to providing equipment like a specialist bed to ensure he was as comfortable as possible, the hospice community team were fantastic. Until you use the hospice’s services, you don’t fully appreciate the range of support they provide – not only in the community but also through their inpatient units, therapy services, and bereavement support service – LivingGrief.

“They truly offer holistic care for the patient and their entire family. As their services grow in Great Yarmouth and Waveney, I hope my fundraising, along with the support of others taking part in events like the Great Yarmouth Seafront 10K & Half Marathon, will help other families receive the hospice’s support when care matters most.”

As charity partner of the Great Yarmouth Seafront 10K & Half Marathon funds raised will go towards St Elizabeth East Coast Hospice’s services.

Since April 2019, St Elizabeth East Coast Hospice has cared for more than 5,000 patients and their families in Great Yarmouth and Waveney, through their healthcare partnership with East Coast Community Healthcare.

James Fox-Golding, Events and Challenges Manager at the hospice, said: “Best of luck to Liz and all the runners taking part in this year’s Great Yarmouth Seafront 10K & Half Marathon.

“It is a fantastic event with a great route. Thank you to all the runners and Active Training Events for their support.

“Every penny raised will make a real difference to our patients and their families, helping the hospice expand its services to support even more people in Great Yarmouth and Waveney who need our vital care.”
