Hospice awarded national volunteering standard

20 July 2010

St Elizabeth Hospice has achieved the Investing in Volunteers (IiV) award, the UK quality standard that recognises best practice in the management of volunteers.

The charity, which provides specialist support, for people throughout East Suffolk, relies on the dedication of around 600 volunteers. They help out with a variety of tasks from administration, patient support, driving, gardening, retail, fundraising, street collections and supporting events.

As part of the accreditation process, the Hospice reviewed its volunteer practices with a survey and by updating policies and documentation, including a volunteer services plan, handbook and welcome pack.  The IiV assessor then interviewed 95 volunteers before submitting a recommendation for endorsement by the Volunteer England assessment panel.

Jo Shevlin, the Hospice’s Human Resources Manager, said “It is a great achievement to have been awarded a nationally recognised standard which demonstrates the commitment and value we place on our volunteers and the great work they carry out for the Hospice.  This process has given us the opportunity to ensure we are providing our volunteers with the best levels of management, support, and guidance.”
