Hair salon for Hospice patients gets a brush up
The hair salon for patients of St Elizabeth Hospice has been modernised and marks the last part of the £1.7m refurbishment of the Ipswich facility.
The work has just been finished and the salon, which is situated in the Day Unit, now has a new adjustable basin making it easier to wash patients’ hair, modern chairs which move up and down, a display cabinet for wigs and hair scarves, a heated towel rail, an up to date sit-under hairdryer as well as better equipment and storage.
The walls have been repainted and there is a spectacular Southwold beach hut mural on the back wall.
Any Hospice patients can have their hair washed, cut or set at the salon and the hairdressers are all professionals who volunteer in their spare time. They can also visit an inpatient’s bedside.
Volunteer hairdresser Jenny Flory, of Kesgrave, who has been helping out for 20 years, said: “I know people like to have their hair done so I approached the Hospice some years ago to see if I could come in to do patients’ hair and they said it would be much appreciated.
“The patients’ eyes light up when you ask them if they would like their hair done. And I feel as though I have made a difference to their day.”

Day Unit manager Helen Finlinson explained the hair salon allowed patients privacy and dignity to discuss body image and hair loss caused by medical treatment, as well as giving them a much needed feel-good treat.
She said: “The hairdressers are skilled and comfortable discussing sensitive issues and suggesting hair styles which may boost a patient’s self esteem. It is a really nice thing to offer patients and it can also be a good ice-breaker for patients worried about accessing day services for the first time.”
To enable more patients to benefit, the Hospice is appealing for extra hairdressing volunteers. If you are interested please contact Claire Lansley on 01473 707016 or email volunteer@stelizabethhospice.org.uk
