Friends Gear Up for 10,000km Cycling Challenge

08 December 2025

Two friends are set to take on a 10,000km cycle ride through Africa in aid of St Elizabeth Hospice.

Cam Wheeler and Robin Hutchinson are embarking on the fundraising challenge in memory of Cam’s brother, Ali, who was supported by the independent Suffolk charity in 2013, before his death aged 24 after being diagnosed with a rare form of sarcoma.

Both experienced long-distance cyclists, Cam and Robin’s challenge will see them begin on 12 December starting from Addis Ababa in Ethiopia, before making their way to Cape Town in South Africa, as part of a journey which they hope to complete by April 2026.

Cam, who lives near Framlingham, said: “The care Ali received was incredible. All the hospice staff are like superhumans.

“They are just so compassionate and our whole family felt reassured knowing Ali was getting the best care possible.

“It meant a huge amount to all of us and this is a big inspiration behind why we are taking on this challenge, so I can give back to the hospice in some way.

“Any donations towards our fundraising would be great and are so important in helping others have a comfortable and well supported end-of-life experience thanks to the support of St Elizabeth Hospice.”

The friends have already tackled several cycling challenges together, including the North Coast 500 and riding from Wales to Suffolk, to name but a few.

The pair aim to average around 100 km a day, with occasional rest days to explore places they visit, as they make their way to Cape Town for April.

Kelly Nekrews, community fundraiser at St Elizabeth Hospice, said: “Best of luck to Cam and Robin with their incredible cycling challenge.

“This is sure to be quite the adventure and the whole hospice team wishes them well as they complete this fundraiser to generate vital funds for our services.”
