Delilah’s ‘Hula-Hooting’ Challenge!

19 August 2022

Ipswich schoolgirl, Delilah Reynolds is putting herself in a spin this summer as she takes on a unique hula hoop challenge as part of the Big Hoot Ipswich 2022, to raise funds for St Elizabeth Hospice.

Nine-year-old, Delilah’s ‘hula-hooting’ challenge will see her hula-hoop for at least ten seconds beside each of the 50 owl statues making up this year’s Big Hoot Ipswich 2022, the third art trail brought to Ipswich by St Elizabeth Hospice in partnership with creative producers Wild in Art.

Starting in July, her ‘hula-hooting’ is being completed in phases throughout the school summer holidays, with Delilah aiming to raise 50p for every second of successful, consecutive hula-hooping, to reach a fundraising goal of £250.

“I decided to do my ‘hula-hooting’ challenge as I really like to help the hospice and I love all the Hoots, and I’ve been learning to hula hoop, so I combined all these things to help raise money for the charity,” Delilah explained.

“So far I think it’s gone well, but sometimes I lose the knack of hula-hooping a little bit, which has been frustrating, but I’m determined to carry on and complete the challenge to raise a lot of money for the hospice and help people.”

Delilah has been inspired to raise funds for the hospice, through the Big Hoot Ipswich 2022, after seeing her Dad, Ken Reynolds, working on the art trail through his role as marketing co-ordinator at St Elizabeth Hospice. Fundraising currently stands at £162, with Ken pledging to release a video of himself trying to hula-hoop if Delilah reaches her £250 target!

Ken added: “Delilah has been keeping a close eye on my Big Hoot work and she has been keen to learn more as the project has progressed. She really enjoyed the previous hospice art trails, Pigs Gone Wild 2016 and Elmer’s Big Parade Suffolk 2019, and has previously raised funds for the hospice, so she thought hard about how she might fundraise for this year’s art trail.

“Hula-hooping is not something she is already good at, but Delilah has been practicing to prepare for the challenge and the targets will be a real test for her. So please do show your support for her effort this summer.”
