5 Questions with Debbie Chapman – Volunteer Partnerships Coordinator and Recruiter

07 December 2020

1.

What is your role at the hospice and how long have you worked there?

I have worked at the hospice since July 2019 as a Volunteer Partnerships Coordinator and Recruiter.

2.

Can you give us an overview of what your day looks like?

That’s the great part of my job, no two days are the same. Even during recent times there is always something different to challenge and inspire. I look after our lovely event volunteers and together with my colleague Nikki, look after the volunteers doing such sterling work in the retail shops. Recently we have been speaking with everybody, helping them to return to their area of volunteering as safely as possible. We are busy brushing up on our I.T. skills and embracing new ways for us to virtually meet up. I really enjoy getting out to the shops and catching up with what’s going on in local communities – there are so many people giving so much.

3.

Have you got a favourite memory from working at the hospice?

I have lots of memories of fun times – getting involved with events, dressing up and getting stuck in. But it’s an early memory for me that sticks in my mind…. I hadn’t been with the hospice long and I was at a local school careers fair talking to the students. One little chap caught my eye as he made a beeline for the hospice stand. He came bowling up and in a very earnest voice said ‘I want to thank you for taking care of my granddad’ – says it all really doesn’t it, the reason we do what we do.

4.

Have you got a favourite memory from working at the hospice?

The diverse ways in which you can volunteer and help, there is an astounding number of things to do, something to suit everybody. All you need is enthusiasm and we will help you to find the thing that suits you and helps you to grow.

5.

What makes your job unique?

The lovely people I work with – our volunteers have so much energy and drive, it’s quite infectious!!
