1000km Triathlon Raises Over £4,000 for Hospice

Hugh Langley, from Framlingham, has raised over £4,000 for St Elizabeth Hospice by recently completing a 1000km triathlon, in memory of his dad, John Langley.

Over the course of 8 days in October, Hugh’s challenge saw him complete a 5km open water swim, in excess of 600 miles cycling throughout Suffolk and Norfolk and finishing on day 8 with a 50km Ultra trail Marathon in Dunwich – a total of 1,000km.

The home event came about after Hugh was unfortunately unable to complete his previous fundraising 1,000km Monster Triathlon earlier this year, after testing positive for Covid only one week before the event.

Hugh said: “I was gutted to have to pull out of the Monster Triathlon in July having trained extensively. The support I received ahead of that challenge was brilliant and I was determined to find a way of recreating the 1,000km triathlon locally.

“Thanks to my amazing wife Jenny, who planned and organised all the cycle routes ensuring that cafés were open so that we could have regular stops.

“This year I turned 50 and it is also the tenth anniversary of Dad’s death. St Elizabeth Hospice is a very important cause to me and I have always wanted to show my thanks to them for the brilliant care and support they gave my Dad and our whole family.”

All funds raised will go towards St Elizabeth Hospice, which every year delivers specialist palliative care to more than 4,000 people living with a progressive or life-limiting illness, and their families, throughout East Suffolk, Great Yarmouth and Waveney.

“The hospice gave Dad and my family 24/7 support. Whenever we needed them, they were there,” explained Hugh, whose dad died in July 2013, following a battle with prostate cancer.

“Dad’s wish was to die in the home that he loved so much, surrounded by his family and cats. The hospice team made this wish come true and we are forever grateful to them for this.”

Thank you also to the members of the local cycling community who joined me on some of the rides which was a massive support.”
