Zest Young Adult Care and Transition Lead, Helen Finlinson will be taking on this year’s London Marathon on 2nd October in aid of the young adult charity.
Part of the St Elizabeth Hospice Group, since 2015, Zest has provided specialist medical and social support services to young adults, aged 14 and upwards, living with progressive and life-limiting illnesses, while also ensuring the smooth transition from children’s hospice into adult care.
Helen, who has worked at St Elizabeth Hospice for more than 15 years, was a driving force behind the creation of Zest which helps meet a previously unmet need in Suffolk.
“I have met the most inspiring young adults and their families, who motivate me every day to ensure our service is always there for them,” said Helen, Head of Inclusion & Development at St Elizabeth Hospice a role which sees her lead on the Zest programme.
“I’ve always dabbled in running, and up until I ran the Great East Run – half marathon – a few years ago the London Marathon was firmly on my bucket list. I found the half marathon extremely challenging so promptly took the London Marathon off my list.
“However, this year a space came up to run for the hospice Zest service and some mad part of me jumped at the chance to take this on! It’s a last minute space which means I have had to cram in the training in the heat of this hot summer, which has made this even more of a mad challenge.
“But when I see what Zest families have to overcome and cope with every day I give myself a talking to and it really helps me to face up to this marathon challenge.
“I know along the way the memories of the Zest young people that are no longer with us and the inspiration of all Zest families will spur me on to do this. If you are able to support me reaching my fundraising target I would be hugely encouraged and grateful for your support.”
