Ten-year-old Finn Bass, from Ipswich, has raised over £775 for St Elizabeth Hospice by completing a 24-hour fundraising camp-out for the charity.
Taking place on 7th July, Finn was inspired to do the challenge after his Grandad shared a story with him about a man who once challenged himself to see how many nights he could spend living outdoors and he managed three years.
Finn chose to raise funds for the hospice, after recently learning about the services the charity provides for free, which are funded by community support, and he was keen help.
“I recently learnt about St Elizabeth Hospice and I can see that is a very good cause”, explained Finn.
“I like to help people and this is a good way to do that and hopefully help people feel happier and more comfortable.
“Thank you so much to everyone who has generously donated to my fundraising. I am very grateful and hope the money helps the hospice and its patients.”
The camp-out saw Finn and his Grandad make a clearing in his grandparents’ back garden. With Finn sleeping on an army-style bivvy bed and branches and tarpaulin being used to create a waterproof roof.
While for cooking the all-important marshmallows, Finn used a portable wood fired stove and kindling, although his parents and grandparents were nearby if needed, Finn completed his camp-out self-sufficiently.
Finn’s Mum, Emma Bass, added: “Finn was so excited to do this for the hospice and we cannot believe how much he has raised. We have very generous friends and family and Finn is really quite overwhelmed and surpassing his target of £150. We are all really proud of him.”
All the funds raised have been donated to St Elizabeth Hospice, which every year delivers specialist palliative care to more than 3,000 people living with a progressive or life-limiting illness, and their families, throughout East Suffolk, Great Yarmouth and Waveney.
Kelly Nekrews, Community Fundraising Assistant at St Elizabeth Hospice, said: “A huge well done to Finn for completing his challenge. You are a very generous young man and we all hope you enjoyed your camping adventure!
“Your support will have helped lots of people and their families, at the hospice, feel more comfortable during difficult times in their lives”
