Spirituality and Humility in Palliative Care

Spirituality and Humility in Palliative Care

This CPD session explores how spirituality and humility shape high-quality palliative and end-of-life care. Participants will consider what spirituality can mean for different individuals, how spiritual needs may change over time, and why staff can feel uncertain about addressing them. The session introduces practical ways to assess and support spiritual needs, including structured conversation tools, and highlights the “total pain” perspective. It then focuses on humility (cultural and intellectual) as a value of caring that strengthens trust, communication, and person-centred decision-making. Learners will reflect on real practice challenges and leave with practical behaviours to support compassionate, inclusive care.

  • Describe the meaning of spirituality and humility
  • Illustrate the individuality of spirituality
  • Explain how humility is nurtured as a value of caring
  • Identify the role of spirituality and humility for the giver and receiver of care
