Optimising Comfort – Symptom Management at End of Life

Health and Social Care professionals looking to understand ways to relieve suffering and maximise comfort at end of life.

Optimising Comfort – Symptom Management at End of Life

Medication at the end of life aims to relieve suffering and maximise comfort, dignity, and quality of life. The focus shifts from cure to symptom control, including pain, breathlessness, nausea, agitation, and anxiety. Regular review ensures medicines remain appropriate, with non-essential treatments stopped. Anticipatory prescribing allows timely relief of predictable symptoms and reduces distress. When swallowing is difficult, medicines are given by alternative routes such as subcutaneous injection. Clear documentation, local guidance, and good communication with patients, families, and carers are essential. Thoughtful prescribing, combined with non-pharmacological measures, supports a calm, comfortable dying process and respects individual wishes and priorities.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Understand common symptoms in the last days of life
  • Explore commonly prescribed medication used to manage symptoms in the last days of life
  • Explore safe prescribing and administration practices
  • Learn how to support patient and carers in medication management
