Toby and Edward Create Fundraising Comic

22 February 2023

Boxford CEVC Primary School pupils, Toby and Edward, have raised £430 for St Elizabeth Hospice as a ‘thank you’ to the Suffolk Charity for providing support to their friend Anya’s Mum, Belinda Logan.

Toby and Edward, both Year 6 pupils at Boxford CEVC Primary School, raised funds for the charity by writing and illustrating their own comic book, which they then sold for £1 to fellow pupils and via a sale in their local village, with their teachers helping them printing and stapling the comics together.

The two friends spent three months, planning their storyline, drawing the artwork as well as marketing and selling their final publication. All funds raised by Toby and Edward’s comic ‘Cheesy Comics Inc’ – which features three stories, Detective Bob, Big Brains and The Wrath of Mrs Pea – have been donated to St Elizabeth Hospice, as the boys were keen to show their support to their friend Anya, as her Mum, Belinda, received care from the charity.

Toby said: “It feels really good to have done something for Anya and her Mummy, raising money for the hospice was a way to say ‘thank you’ for helping her family.

“Edward does the illustrations and I write the story and colour the images in, we’re a good team. I’m really proud Edward and I achieved our goal of raising over £100 by such a large amount, we advertised the comic for £1 but people gave larger donations which is really kind and we are very grateful to everyone who supported us.”

An independent charity, every year the hospice delivers specialist palliative care to more than 3,000 people living with a progressive or life-limiting illness, and their families, throughout East Suffolk, Great Yarmouth and Waveney.

Annually this service costs £12.9 million to deliver, with 70% of these funds being generated by the local community’s support of the hospice’s income streams for example retail shops, events, individual fundraising – such as people like Toby and Edward –  as well as gifts in Wills and donations.

Lesley Rawlinson, community and partnerships fundraiser for St Elizabeth Hospice, said: “Thank you so much to Toby and Edward for their brilliant work in raising such a fantastic amount for the hospice.

“Our whole team have loved reading your comic which is so beautifully written and illustrated. It truly is a unique way of fundraising and such a thoughtful and kind thing to do to show your support to Anya and her family.

“Every penny really will make a difference, as we continue to develop our services to support more people and their families throughout East Suffolk, Great Yarmouth and Waveney, who need our care when it matters most.”
