VOED – VERIFICATION OF EXPECTED DEATH
Verification of Expected Death (VOED) is an important stage in the process for relatives and carers. Until this has been performed, no further action can be taken with regard to the deceased. When a person has an expected or predictable death, this can be confirmed by a registered medical practitioner, or other appropriately trained and qualified individual.
This course helps to identify the role of the registered nurse (or other registered healthcare professional) in verification of death and the conditions set by the nursing midwifery council (NMC) when undertaking this role. It outlines the differences between expected death and other patterns of dying and reviews terms such as palliative, terminal, end of life and dying and death so that you can confidently and competently verify expected death.
This course is delivered in two parts.
Part 1 – A three hour workshop session which will:
- Provide you with knowledge and guidance on VOED
- Ensure understanding of your role as a registered healthcare professional in VOED
- Provide you with information on the legal requirements and the skills required
- Clarify the importance of documentation
- Include discussion on the requirements for your VOED Portfolio
Following this session there will be a period of self-assessment which you must update in your ‘Portfolio’ where you will be able to transfer and develop your current knowledge and understanding, building your confidence to be able to verify an expected death.
Part 2 – Having completed part 1, you will attend a VIVA session (about an hour long). This session includes assessment of your ‘self-assessment homework’ and questions to test your knowledge and understanding. You will have to have participated and passed the VIVA in order to be considered as being competent in carrying out Verification of Expected Death.
This course is available to Registered Nurses / registered healthcare professional with consent from your manager prior to commencing the course.
