Hold your own event

Organising your own fundraising event can be fun and rewarding. Read our guide below for tips on getting started.

1. The event

Do you know exactly what your activity will be? Could it follow a theme? View our A-Z of fundraising ideas for inspiration.

2. The location

Where will you hold your event? How much space will you need? Could you host it at home, in your workplace, a local church hall, school or community centre?

3. The date

Consider the best date for the highest attendance. An office party might be best after work, or on payday. A sports club event would work well at its peak time. To involve children, choose the weekend or after school. Don't forget to ensure you have enough time for planning and preparation for the event. If you are planning a large event, check that there aren't any other large local or national events taking place at the same time.

4. Guests & publicity

Who do you want to invite to your event? Is your event for family and friends? Is it a work event? If so, could you invite customers, colleagues and suppliers? Or is it a larger event that would benefit from publicity?

5. Maximising your fundraising

There are many ways you can raise extra money at your event, how about running a raffle or holding an auction of promises? If your event is a sponsored event then you could set up your own online fundraising page. Visit www.justgiving.com and follow the instructions to start your free page. Make sure you get your guests to Gift Aid any donations they make at your event. Using Gift Aid means that for every £1 they donate, we can claim back 25p from the Inland Revenue at no extra cost to the donor. For further advice about Gift Aid visit www.hmrc.gov.uk/charities/gift-aid

When organising any event there are always important safety and legal issues to consider. You may require a license for certain event types. Download our fundraising pack here and learn more. Always check with your local authority and venue manager to ensure you comply with current guidelines.

If you decide to organise an event in aid of St Elizabeth Hospice, please tell us about it by completing our 'tell us about your event form below'. Once we receive your completed form we will contact you to see if you require any help.
